January’s Squash Tournament

Twenty-two players from Rye and Cranbrook squash clubs came together for a friendly yet competitive tournament on Sunday 15th January. Organised by Rye squash coach Gary Marshall, play started at 2pm and the final game was at about 5.30pm.

The tournament took the format of a Monrad competition. It was a 32 draw, with the 16 winners from the first round going into the top half and the losers into the bottom half. So if you won your first match you were guaranteed a place between 1-16 and the bottom half were playing for places 17-32. The second round took the players to the next breakdown, places 1-8, 9-16, 17-24 and 25-32. This format continued until all positions from 1-32 had been decided.

The final match was between Ewan Hopkins and Ollie Randall – a close-fought game which Ewan just won. After the matches were completed, everyone enjoyed food supplied by Amanda Box and refreshments from the bar.

Hopefully another tournament will be held in the summer.
