Tennis in Rye

A fantastic range of facilities and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Whether you’re a beginner, a rusty returner or an experienced player, you’ll be spoilt for choice. You can play all year round on our three artificial clay floodlit courts and enjoy the feel of Wimbledon on our eight grass courts from May to September.

Rye Lawn Tennis Club offers a social tennis environment, with coaching and tournaments, on grass and artificial clay courts.

Junior and Adult Coaching

Coaching for all ages and standards, from complete beginner to performance level players. Group coaching sessions are held throughout the week, with individual coaching being arranged directly with coaches.

Tennis Programmes

The club has active programmes for juniors and adults, with regular group coaching and individual lessons for players of any level and age throughout the year.

Tournaments & Events

If you’re a club member and a more competitive player, there’s a growing list of opportunities for match and competition play. We run regular club tournaments across most sports.

Annual Invitation Tournament

The club is well known for its Annual Invitation Tournament, now in its ninety-fifth year, which attracts top players from clubs across the UK and Europe, as well as entrants from both Harvard and Yale universities in some years. Celebrating one hundred years since the club was founded and the first tournament was held, the 2022 tournament saw some 210 players doing battle on the club’s outstanding grass courts. For a report, see Annual Invitation Tournament 2022 under Latest News.
The 2023 Invitation Tournament took place from Friday 4th August to Monday 7th August. For a report see Annual Invitation Tournament 2023 under Latest News.

Matches

The club competes in the Ladies Sussex County League, managed by Julie Shelley-Barnes (jshelleybarnes@gmail.com), and the Mixed Wealden League, managed by Karen Spencer (karen@karenwilks.co.uk). Matches are also arranged against other clubs, including the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Queen’s, Walmer and Rye Golf Club.

The Art of Grass Court Maintenance

It is only by investing significant time, money and effort in this renovation process that we can maintain the exceptional quality of the courts that we all enjoy during the summer months. As our President Chris Gorringe said this year – “they are some of the finest grass courts in the country”.

For many of you, this process takes place over just a few days, without you being aware of what is involved. So we’ve made a film that explains what is involved in the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Non-members may not play tennis on the grass courts unless accompanied or introduced by a member, who is responsible for ensuring that they are equipped with white tennis clothing and the correct footwear. Hard courts are available for non-members, if not previously booked or already being used by members. Guest fees are £20 per person per session up to 2 hours or £10 if playing with a member. If accompanied guests are under 18, fees are half the above rates. Please contact tennis@ryetennisandsquashclub.org.uk if you would like to play as a guest. Fees should be paid before going on court.

It is a strict rule of Rye LTC that members and their guests wear predominantly white clothing and proper tennis shoes when using the grass tennis courts. An hour’s play wearing the wrong shoes can ruin a grass court for the whole season.

The club has an online booking system for the tennis, padel and squash courts at ClubSpark. You will be given login access to this on membership. You may book up to 14 days in advance.

A stock of sports clothing and club ties is maintained in the clubhouse.
