Men’s Open Veterans Tournament 2024

The men’s open Veterans doubles grass court tournament for over 45s was held on Saturday 8 June, organised by Bob Thomson and supported by his wife, Alison.

The weather was perfect, being dry and warm with a gentle Rye breeze.  56 players entered, 40 of whom were non-members from 17 different clubs coming from as far away as North and West London, Surrey and East Kent.  There was a good range of ages and abilities.

The grass courts were immaculate and a pleasure to play on.  There were many compliments on the day about the quality of the courts as well as from those who wrote in after the event.  All credit to Adam Stunt and Fred Menzies for all their hard work in preparing and maintaining the grass courts to such a high standard.

The format for the day was round robin play in groups.  Some glorious and quality tennis was played and was entertaining for the spectators.  Group winners went into play offs and play off winners were each presented with a bottle of local wine from Chapel Down by our Chairman, Jonathan Jempson.  The winners of the younger age groups were Phil Harper (Rye) & Will Skidelsky (Meopham) and of the older age groups were David Drayson (Rye) & Steve Allum (Goudhurst).  After the tournament was concluded, some players formed their own fours and continued playing.

A delicious and convivial lunch was provided by Katie and her team from Pink Kitchen in the clubhouse.  Denys did a great job running the bar as always and this provided some much needed liquid refreshment with lunch and during the afternoon.

The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all and thank you to all who participated.  It is intended to hold the event again next year on 7 June 2025.
